Enjoying a lovely, warm and inviting bathroom stems from proper maintenance of the bathroom area. A dirty bathroom could be very repulsive and of particular reference is the shower curtain. One of the many challenges of a shower curtain is the appearance of mildew or polka dots caused by soap and other detergents on your curtain. Therefore, understanding how to clean a shower curtain could just be one way to a pleasurable bathroom experience.
Why Wash shower curtain?
Have you ever had to dispose-off your shower curtain due to stains or mildew or it becoming slimy? Well, you don’t have to anymore.
Let’s take a walk through some basic steps I took in dealing with mildew or polka dot stains on my shower curtain. In the case of plastic, vinyl or cloth shower curtains, you too can do same and have your shower curtains looking new again.
Easy Steps on How to wash shower curtain
There are two options to cleaning your shower curtain. You either machine wash or hand-wash your shower curtain. However, I recommend machine wash always may be due to convenience. So to wash:
- Detach curtains from Rod
If it has to be machine washed, then you might need to separate curtains from the rod for washing.
- Prepare washing machine
Add cold water to your washing machine, enough to get the job done.
- Add baking soda and detergent to the washing machine
Add ½ a cup of baking soda and detergent to the water. The baking soda usually helps to soften and remove stains from the curtains without it losing its sharpness.
- Place the shower curtain and some towels in the washing machine
It is best to put both the shower curtain and towels into the washing machine. The towels help to reduce friction or any damage to the plastic curtains. The plastic curtain could wear out due to pressure, but with the towels, it helps for a better washing experience.
- Add vinegar to the water
Once done with washing, you can add a cup of vinegar to the water to help remove odor and keep your curtain fresh. Make sure the machine has enough water before adding the vinegar. Allow shower to rinse gently for a while.
- Replace curtains immediately
For vinyl or plastic curtains, you can put back on the curtain rod to dry. Your curtains will dry out naturally.
Tips for keeping your curtain clean
- Do not spin or use a dryer for plastic or vinyl curtains as it might tear due to pressure from the machine. The dryer could melt the curtain due to heat.
- Always wash your curtain regularly, say monthly to keep them looking neat.
- You can iron cloth curtain with low heat to dry.
- To hand-wash curtains, while hanging, you can make use of a small towel, baking soda, and detergent. Then rinse off immediately, allowing to dry.
- No need to make use of fabric softener to wash shower curtains.
Remember, to enjoy a clean bathroom environment involves consistency and a regular habit of cleaning and not a one-time event. Whatever type of shower curtain you use, knowing how to clean shower curtain would always be a handy experience anytime.
